You never think they’ll happen until they do. Fredericksburg Chevrolet GMC has a checklist of things to go by if and when you have a blowout.
Step 1: Don’t Panic
Although this can be a bit of a scary situation, the most important thing is that you stay safe. Take a moment to assess what exactly is happening first.
Step 2: Do not hit your brakes at all
This may seem like the right thing to do in the moment, but it can cause more damage and loss of control for you. Make sure you’re only lightly accelerating and heading in a straight direction. When you’re ready, slowly let your foot off the acceleration to low down.
Step 3: Pull over and turn on your hazard lights
Turn on your hazard lights as soon as you can so other drivers will know you are in need of help. Slowly start steering right and head off the road or onto the shoulder if possible to get out of traffic. Once you have fully come to a stop and are safe, get out and change your tire.
