When and how to change oil near Fredericksburg, TX

When driving in the Hill Country, it’s not always easy keeping up with your vehicle’s oil. Our service team here at Fredericksburg Chevy GMC wants to give our Fredericksburg, Boerne, San Antonio, Kerrville, and Comfort customers our advice on how to know when your vehicle needs an oil change.

How do I know when it’s time to change my oil?

The  color of your oil is a good indicator of whether or not it’s time to change it. When you pull out your dipstick, the color of the oil should have a brown tint. If the oil looks more black in color, it’s probably time to change your oil or call your nearest GM service center in Fredericksburg, TX.

You can also keep an eye on your dash inside your car. When the ‘Maintenance Required’ light comes on, it’s time to change your oil.

How do I change my oil?

First, you’ll need to jack your car, but make sure you are doing it in the safest way possible, and with enough space to get the job done. Next, unscrew the oil drain plug located underneath the car and have a bucket or drain pan that the oil can drain into.

Then, remove your old oil filter. It should look like a soda can-sized cylinder near the engine. When you’re unscrewing it, oil should start draining from the top of the cylinder. Give it time to drain all the way, then finish removing the filter.

Replace the drain plug and filter without tightening too much, as this can cause oil pan damage. Lower your vehicle back onto the ground, open the hood and put that new oil in using a funnel. Once you’ve checked to make sure there aren’t any leaks, you should be good to go!
