If your car won’t start, it might be due to a dead battery. Jumpstarting your vehicle is a simple process that can get you back on the road in no time. Here’s how to do it safely and efficiently:

What you’ll need:

  • Jumper cables
  • Another working vehicle

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Position The Vehicles
    • Park the booster vehicle close enough to your vehicle so that the jumper cords can reach and connect to both the working and dead batteries.
  1. Identify The Battery Terminals
    • Pop the hoods and locate the positive (+), typically red, and negative (-), typically black, battery terminals. These terminals are what you will be connecting the jumper cables to.
  1. Connect The Jumper Cables To The Battery Terminals
    • Attach the red clamp (positive) to the dead battery’s positive terminal.
    • Attach the red clamp at the other end of the red cable to the working battery’s positive terminal.
    • Attach the black clamp (negative) on that same end to the working battery’s negative terminal.
    • Attach the remaining black clamp at the other end of the black cable to a piece of bare metal (unpainted metal surface) on the car with the dead battery.
  1. Start The Working Vehicle
    • Turn on the working vehicle and leave idle for two to three minutes.
  1. Start The Dead Vehicle
    • After a few minutes, attempt to start the vehicle with the dead battery.
    • If the vehicle starts, leave it running to help recharge the battery.
  1. Disconnect The Jumper Cables
    • First, detach the black (negative) clamp from the piece of bare metal it is attached to on the jumped car.
    • Detach the black (negative) clamp from the booster car.
    • Detach the red (positive) clamp from the booster car.
    • Finally, detach the red (negative) clamp from the jumped car.
  1. Let The Jumped Car Run
    • Drive the vehicle that was jump started and let it run for at least 15 minutes to allow the alternator to recharge the battery.
